We used size measurements from Cenozoic populations of the ostracode genus Poseidonamicus, in conjunction with phylogeny and paleotemperature estimates, to show that climatic cooling leads to significant increases in body size, both overall and within individual lineages. The magnitude of size increase due to Cenozoic cooling is consistent with temperature-size relationships in geographically separated modern populations (Bergmann's Rule). Thus population-level phenotypic evolution in response to climate change can be an important determinant of macroevolutionary trends in body size.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrate paleontology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Arthropoda</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>biologic evolution</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>climate change</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>cold tolerance</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cope's rule</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cope-Bergmann hypothesis</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Crustacea</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Deep Sea Drilling Project</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>deep-sea environment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Eocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>fossil record</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Holocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Mandibulata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>marine environment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Neogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ostracoda</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Poseidonamicus</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>size</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>temperature</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>valves</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><supplementalInformation><gco:CharacterString>Supplemental information/data is available in the online version of this article</gco:CharacterString></supplementalInformation></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
