From west to east there are continental masses with Triassic rifts, proximal continental blocks with kilometers-thick Mesozoic carbonates, more distal areas of Paleozoic horsts flanked by Triassic-Jurassic dipping wedges of sediments, including salt and overlain by Cretaceous basalts, and most distal areas of serpentinized upper mantle. Plate history began along with the Late Triassic formation of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province and involved Triassic-Jurassic rifting, Jurassic-early Cenozoic extension and Oligocene-Recent strike-slip. Great extension promoted volcanism, foundering, eastward growth of the plate by backarc spreading and distribution of continental fragments on the plate interior and along its margins. Hydrocarbons probably are present. Caribbean geology has important implications for understanding of oceanic plateaus, intra-oceanic volcanic arcs, the "andesite problem" and genesis of "subduction" HP/LT metamorphic rocks. The model can be tested by re-examination of existing samples and seismic data and by deep sea drilling.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Solid-earth geophysics</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Atlantic Ocean</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>back-arc basins</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>basin analysis</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>basins</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Caribbean Plate</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Caribbean region</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Central America</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>depositional environment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>faults</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Gulf of Mexico</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>in situ</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Integrated Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Mesozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>models</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>North Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>ocean basins</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Oligocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleoenvironment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleogeography</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>petroleum</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>petroleum exploration</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>plate tectonics</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>reconstruction</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>rifting</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sea-floor spreading</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sedimentary basins</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sedimentation</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>strike-slip faults</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Triassic</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-98.0000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-58.0000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>7.0000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>30.0400</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Caribbean region</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Central America</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Gulf of Mexico</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
