Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 321 Site U1337 contains expanded, nearly continuous records of diatomaceous sediment deposited in deep waters of the eastern equatorial Pacific during the Neogene. In this study, the variability of the biogenic silica at Site U1337 is described by examining temporal changes between the latest middle Miocene and the latest Pleistocene. Periods of highest opal content match well the occurrence of diatom-rich, laminated sediment of the early late Miocene and the late Miocene-Pliocene transition.
