These basalts can be taken as typically representative of the upper parts of the seamounts in the Emperor Seamount chain. Variations in the measured physical properties among the samples result from their water content or porosity. The variations and the intrinsic (pore-free) properties of the seamount basalts are comparable to those of normal sea-floor basalts.
