The floor magnetic age at this site is about 17 my, about 1 my younger than at sites 1162 and 1164. This site placement was designed to test the distribution of Pacific and Indian-type mantle across the three zones at 17-18 Ma (Segment B4, B5, and Zone A). Hole 1163A is 15.7 m (33% core recovery) of a medium gray moderately plagioclase olivine phyric pillow basalt, which is divided into two lithologic units. Unit 1 is slightly altered, and Unit 2 is a slightly to moderately altered medium gray aphyric basalt. Ba and Zr systematics of the glass indicate that Indian-type mantle was present beneath Segment B4 approximately 17 m.y. ago.
