Manihiki Plateau is a large (500,000 km (super 2) ) mid-ocean platform that rises 3000 m above the abyssal plains of surrounding ocean basins (depth, 5500 m). Its foundation evolved about 112 Ma ago by massive outpouring of basaltic lavas at a plate triple junction. The plateau is blanketed by a 900 m thick sedimentary section comprising (i) mid-Late Cretaceous volcaniclastic sandstones/siltstones grading upwards to limestones/chalks and (ii) 500 m of Tertiary nanno-foram chalks and oozes. Cores from DSDP 317 drill-site on the Manihiki High Plateau indicate that the volcaniclastic sediments contain native copper and some thin beds rich in organic carbon. Manganese nodules were dredged from 11 stations on the eastern and western marginal slopes of the plateau and adjacent parts of the Penrhyn/Samoan Basins. Abundant hauls of nodules were obtained from depths of 3300-5260 m. A field of volcanoes was discovered at the NE edge of the plateau and imaged by SeaMARC II.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Economic geology, geology of ore deposits</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Oceanography</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Applied geophysics</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>bottom features</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>composition</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>East Pacific</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>economic geology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>hydrothermal alteration</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>hydrothermal processes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>manganese composition</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Manihiki Plateau</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>marine sediments</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>metal ores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>metasomatism</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>mineral deposits, genesis</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>mud volcanoes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>nodules</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>ocean floors</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>oceanography</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Pacific Ocean</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>processes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sedimentary processes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sediments</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>seismic methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>South Pacific</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Southeast Pacific</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Suwarrow Trough</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>volcaniclastics</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
