Zircon fission track ages (ZFTA) on Rangitawa Tephra from five sites in the southern North Island yield mean site ages in the range 0.34 to 0.40 Ma with a weighted mean of 0.35+ or -0.04 Ma (l alpha). On the basis of glass shard major-element chemistry, ferromagnesian mineralogy, ZFTA and similarity of paleomagnetic dates of proposed tephra correlatives in deep-sea cores, it is concluded that Rangitawa Tephra represents a major eruptive event in the Taupo Volcanic Zone most probably associated with eruption of the Whakamaru-group ignimbrites (0.35-0.39 Ma) or less likely the Paeroa Range Group ignimbrites (0.36-0.38 Ma). Pollen analyses from two onshore sites, together with regional loess stratigraphy, show that Rangitawa Tephra was erupted during a glacial period. The ZFTA and previously reported oxygen isotope data from DSDP Site 594 indicate that Rangitawa Tephra was erupted near the end of oxygen isotope stage 10.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary geology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>age</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Australasia</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>eruptions</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>fission tracks</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geochronology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>igneous rocks</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>ignimbrite</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>middle Pleistocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>mineral composition</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>miospores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>New Zealand</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>North Island</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>palynomorphs</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Pleistocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>pyroclastics</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Rangitawa Tephra</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Taupo volcanic zone</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>volcanic rocks</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>volcaniclastics</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>volcanoes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>volcanology</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>166.3000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>178.3000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>-47.3000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>-34.3000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>New Zealand</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
