Eight sites focused on the sedimentary facies and depositional record of the most recently active channel-levee system from upper to lower fan. Three of these sites recovered continuous sections up to 100 m thick of aggrading sandy channel fills beneath the channel axis, as well as sandy lobe deposits from the lower fan. Seven sites penetrated as deep as 434 m and sampled older buried channel-levee systems and thick, interbedded muddy mass-transport units. Suites of wire-line logs, including FMS, run at eight sites reveal log motifs of various sedimentary facies and provide lithologies for intervals of non-recovery. Sites were located in well imaged channel, levee, mass flow environments both near-surface and subsurface, on the basis of multibeam bathymetry, GLORIA side-scan sonar imagery, and high-resolution 3.5 kHz, watergun and airgun records. The combined analysis of the sedimentary and log sequences with the acoustic profiles and site morphology allows for a detailed assessment of temporal and spatial changes in fan processes, and for the evolution of fan morphology, during the last 400,000 years.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary geology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>acoustical methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>acoustical profiles</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>aggradation</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Amazon Fan</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Atlantic Ocean</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>bathymetry</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>changes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Equatorial Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>evolution</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical profiles</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>GLORIA</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>high-resolution methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>imagery</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 155</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>lithofacies</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>North Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>ocean floors</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sediment transport</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sediments</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>side-scanning methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>submarine fans</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>well logs</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><aggregationInfo><MD_AggregateInformation><aggregateDataSetIdentifier><RS_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>urn:org.iodp:exp:155</gco:CharacterString></code><codeSpace><gco:CharacterString>urn</gco:CharacterString></codeSpace></RS_Identifier></aggregateDataSetIdentifier><associationType><DS_AssociationTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode_largerWorkCitation">largerWorkCitation</DS_AssociationTypeCode></associationType><initiativeType><DS_InitiativeTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode_campaign">campaign</DS_InitiativeTypeCode></initiativeType></MD_AggregateInformation></aggregationInfo><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-50.0000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-44.0000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>3.0000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>9.0000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Amazon Fan</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
