All regional stages within the central Paratethyan realm (Central/Eastern Europe) were originally identified by benthic foraminifera and/or mollusc in shelf environments and are defined by transgressive-regressive facies cycles. At the basin margin well-defined unconformities were observed at the base of the stages. However, within the basins, these unconformities become conformable. Working on seismic and well data, we found sequence boundaries, that correspond very well to the stage boundaries. These stages correlate within the Paratethyan region, from Austria to the Caspian realm, and show a direct correlation with the global stages. Thus we interpret the Paratethyan stage boundaries as sequence boundaries. We believe that these boundaries, the global stage boundaries, and the independently identified isotope peaks from DSDP cores reflect the same global event--the eustatic sea level fall. The chronostratigraphic position of the sequence boundary depends on eustasy and tectonic subsidence. The events--eustatic sea level falls, dated at the conformities--are global, but the sequence boundaries are not exactly synchronous from basin to basin.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>biostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Central Europe</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>chronostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>cores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>correlation</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>cycles</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Deep Sea Drilling Project</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Europe</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>eustacy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Foraminifera</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>geophysical surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Hungary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>interpretation</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>lithofacies</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>lithostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>magnetostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>marine environment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>middle Miocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Miocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Mollusca</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Neogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Oligocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Pannonian Basin</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paratethys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>petroleum</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>petroleum exploration</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>production</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Protista</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>regression</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sea-level changes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>seismic methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>shelf environment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>stratigraphic boundary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>subsidence</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>surveys</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>transgression</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>two-dimensional models</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>unconformities</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>wells</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>16.1000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>23.0000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>45.4500</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>48.3000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Hungary</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
