The species has a very short range in the lower part of the Upper Miocene Neodenticula kamtschatica - Nitzschia rolandii Subzone (NPD 7Ba) of the N. kamtschatica Zone (NPD 7B). The first occurrence of this species is coincident with the boundary between this zone and the underlying Rouxia californica Zone (NPD 7A), and hence it is a good marker for this boundary.
