In contrast, coeval trochospiral planktic foraminifera do not exhibit the isotope/size signatures that typify strongly photosymbiotic species. Comparison to Cenozoic taxa demonstrates that photosymbiosis has recurred throughout planktic foraminiferal history and has evolved independently in superfamilies characterized by very different gross skeletal morphologies. The historical contingency of that evolution is illustrated by the consequences of the Cretaceous/Paleogene mass extinction, which terminated the Cretaceous lineages of photosymbiotic planktic foraminifera but did not permanently extinguish photosymbiont reliance by planktic foraminifera.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrate paleontology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>biologic evolution</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>C-13/C-12</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>carbon</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cretaceous</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Dinoflagellata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>ecology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>faunal list</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Foraminifera</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Holocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>isotope ratios</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>isotopes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>K-T boundary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>lower Paleocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>mass extinctions</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Mesozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>O-18/O-16</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>oxygen</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleoecology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>palynomorphs</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>photosymbiosis</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>planktonic taxa</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Pleistocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Protista</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>size</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>solar energy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>stable isotopes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>stratigraphic boundary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>symbiosis</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Upper Cretaceous</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
