Site 593, located on the Challenger Plateau (Lord Howe Rise) 270 km from the nearest land mass of northern South Island, is a reoccupation of Site 284 which was drilled in a water depth of 1066 m. The sequence of foraminiferal first appearance, last appearance, and coiling direction change datums are the same for each site but are offset an average of 5.4 metres uphole in Site 593.
