Based on seismic stratigraphy, previous studies suggested that the N.J. margin sequences are primarily either highstand deposits or lowstand systems tracts. However, benthic foraminiferal biofacies and planktonic foraminiferal abundances proved to be key to deciphering systems tracts development. By integrating foraminiferal, lithologic, and downhole logging evidence within a seismically-defined sequence stratigraphic framework, we show that Pleistocene sequences cored by Leg 174A are characterized by transgressive and highstand deposits, whereas Miocene sequences consist of lowstand, transgressive, and highstand deposits, with repeated flooding surfaces indicating parasequences. We propose that the erosion responsible for the shelf sequence boundaries can be attributed to mean lowerings of base level in response to changes in the mean states of glaciation that marked: 1) the Miocene increase in ice volume and glacioeustatic lowering; 2) the transition to Northern Hemisphere-dominated glaciation; and 3) the transition to the large eustatic fluctuations of the middle-late Pleistocene.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary geology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Atlantic Ocean</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>continental shelf</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Foraminifera</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>global change</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 174A</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>New Jersey</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>North Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Northwest Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleo-oceanography</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleobathymetry</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleoenvironment</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Protista</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sea-level changes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>United States</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>upper Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><aggregationInfo><MD_AggregateInformation><aggregateDataSetIdentifier><RS_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>urn:org.iodp:exp:174A</gco:CharacterString></code><codeSpace><gco:CharacterString>urn</gco:CharacterString></codeSpace></RS_Identifier></aggregateDataSetIdentifier><associationType><DS_AssociationTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode_largerWorkCitation">largerWorkCitation</DS_AssociationTypeCode></associationType><initiativeType><DS_InitiativeTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode_campaign">campaign</DS_InitiativeTypeCode></initiativeType></MD_AggregateInformation></aggregationInfo><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-80.0000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>20.0000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>0.0000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>75.0000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>New Jersey</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>North Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
