Frozen 1-2 m cores representing the last approximately 130 years show a deforestation-related increased input of terrestrial carbon to the basin, and cyclic variations in organic carbon, diatoms, and fish remains that suggest a link to climate oscillations. Ocean Drilling Program cores from Leg 169S greatly extend the sediment record, to more than 10,000 years. Study of diatoms, carbon isotope ratios, and fish remains from these along ODP cores shows that the marine environment has been stable during the Holocene. The long ODP cores also indicate that, beginning approximately 10,000 years B.P., Saanich Inlet basin rapidly assumed the broad-scale oceano-graphic and biologic features seen today.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary geology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>algae</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>biostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>British Columbia</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Canada</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>carbon</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>climate change</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>cores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>diatoms</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>framework silicates</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Holocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>human activity</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>land use</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 169S</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>marine sediments</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>opal</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>organic carbon</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleoclimatology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Plantae</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Quaternary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Saanich Inlet</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>salinity</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sediments</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>silica minerals</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>silicates</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>temperature</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>variations</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Western Canada</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><aggregationInfo><MD_AggregateInformation><aggregateDataSetIdentifier><RS_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>urn:org.iodp:exp:169S</gco:CharacterString></code><codeSpace><gco:CharacterString>urn</gco:CharacterString></codeSpace></RS_Identifier></aggregateDataSetIdentifier><associationType><DS_AssociationTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode_largerWorkCitation">largerWorkCitation</DS_AssociationTypeCode></associationType><initiativeType><DS_InitiativeTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode_campaign">campaign</DS_InitiativeTypeCode></initiativeType></MD_AggregateInformation></aggregationInfo><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-123.1500</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-123.1500</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>48.3000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>48.3000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Saanich Inlet</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
