Sites drilled on the continental shelf near New Jersey are critical for estimating the amplitude and timing of sea level change during the Icehouse interval. Until recently, the chronology of the Miocene sequences remained uncertain, as calcareous microfossil zonal markers are rare in these sediments. Palynological data (i.e. dinocysts and pollen) collected from ODP Leg 174A cores (1071 and 1072) and the Leg 174AX onshore cores (Ocean View and Bass River) allow middle and upper Miocene sequences to be correlated across the New Jersey shelf and onto the Atlantic Coastal Plain. Maximum and minimum ages have been assigned to sequence boundaries using the calibrated dinocyst zonation of de Verteuil and Norris (1996). Based on the dinocyst data, sequence boundary pp5(s) was identified as late Miocene in age (5.9-7.4 Ma) and not Plio-Pleistocene as was first assumed. Boundary m0.5(s) appears to have been generated between 7.4 and 9.2 Ma and m1 appears to be older than 11.4 Ma. Most samples analyzed from the Ocean View borehole unfortunately appear to be barren of palynomorphs, but a number of fossiliferous samples allow sediments to be correlated on the Mid-Atlantic Transect.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Atlantic Coastal Plain</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>biostratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>continental shelf</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>cores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>correlation</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Dinoflagellata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Icehouse interval</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 174A</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 174AX</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Mid-Atlantic Transect</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Miocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>miospores</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Neogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>New Jersey</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleobathymetry</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>palynomorphs</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>pollen</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sea-level changes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sequence stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>stratigraphic boundary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>United States</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><aggregationInfo><MD_AggregateInformation><aggregateDataSetIdentifier><RS_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>urn:org.iodp:exp:174A</gco:CharacterString></code><codeSpace><gco:CharacterString>urn</gco:CharacterString></codeSpace></RS_Identifier></aggregateDataSetIdentifier><associationType><DS_AssociationTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode_largerWorkCitation">largerWorkCitation</DS_AssociationTypeCode></associationType><initiativeType><DS_InitiativeTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode_campaign">campaign</DS_InitiativeTypeCode></initiativeType></MD_AggregateInformation></aggregationInfo><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-75.3500</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-72.1600</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>38.3000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>41.2100</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>New Jersey</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
