Productivity has generally been higher at Sites 1082 and 1084 than near the Congo River because of upwelling associated with the Benguela Current. A common decrease of opal MAR at all four sites at around 900 ka probably was caused by relaxation in intensity of southeast Trade Wind intensity, which decreased upwelling along the Namib Margin and lowered delivery of moisture to the West African Monsoon.
