The analysis of mixed layer dwelling planktonic foraminifera permits the measurement of surface water conditions and provides significant insights into Eocene climate dynamics and how these differed from those of the present day. The study exposed a more complicated pattern of climate variability than was formerly anticipated, with large (&gt;1 per mil) and rapid (&lt;10 k.y.) variations in delta (super 18) O. The magnitude of change is greater than that seen in open-ocean Pleistocene records but could not have been caused by ice-volume and/or sea-level fluctuations. Instead, the oxygen isotope shifts resulted primarily from large oscillations in sea-surface temperatures with shifts of up to 12 degrees C. High frequency instability of sea-surface temperatures may have been attributable to deflections in the position of the Gulf Stream across the Blake Plateau. The results indicate that the regional oceanography of the middle Eocene western North Atlantic was not consistently warm or stable and that short-term regional climatic oscillations has been pervasive in time and space even during periods that lacked significant ice-volume fluctuations.</gco:CharacterString>
<status><MD_ProgressCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#MD_ProgressCode_completed">completed</MD_ProgressCode></status><descriptiveKeywords><MD_Keywords><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Stratigraphy</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Atlantic Ocean</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Blake Nose</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Blake Plateau</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>C-13/C-12</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>carbon</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Cenozoic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Eocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>fluctuations</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Foraminifera</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Gulf Stream</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>high-resolution methods</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Invertebrata</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>isotope ratios</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>isotopes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Leg 171B</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>microfossils</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>middle Eocene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>North Atlantic</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>O-18/O-16</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Ocean Drilling Program</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>oscillations</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>oxygen</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleo-oceanography</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>paleoclimatology</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Paleogene</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>planktonic taxa</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Protista</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>sea-level changes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>stable isotopes</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>Tertiary</gco:CharacterString></keyword><keyword><gco:CharacterString>variations</gco:CharacterString></keyword></MD_Keywords></descriptiveKeywords><aggregationInfo><MD_AggregateInformation><aggregateDataSetIdentifier><RS_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>urn:org.iodp:exp:171B</gco:CharacterString></code><codeSpace><gco:CharacterString>urn</gco:CharacterString></codeSpace></RS_Identifier></aggregateDataSetIdentifier><associationType><DS_AssociationTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_AssociationTypeCode_largerWorkCitation">largerWorkCitation</DS_AssociationTypeCode></associationType><initiativeType><DS_InitiativeTypeCode codeList="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode" codeListValue="http://www.isotc211.org/2005/resources/Codelist/gmxCodelists.xml#DS_InitiativeTypeCode_campaign">campaign</DS_InitiativeTypeCode></initiativeType></MD_AggregateInformation></aggregationInfo><language><gco:CharacterString>English</gco:CharacterString></language><topicCategory><MD_TopicCategoryCode>geoscientificInformation</MD_TopicCategoryCode></topicCategory><extent><EX_Extent><geographicElement><EX_GeographicBoundingBox><westBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-77.0000</gco:Decimal></westBoundLongitude><eastBoundLongitude><gco:Decimal>-76.0000</gco:Decimal></eastBoundLongitude><southBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>29.3000</gco:Decimal></southBoundLatitude><northBoundLatitude><gco:Decimal>30.3000</gco:Decimal></northBoundLatitude></EX_GeographicBoundingBox></geographicElement><geographicElement><EX_GeographicDescription><geographicIdentifier><MD_Identifier><code><gco:CharacterString>Blake Nose</gco:CharacterString></code></MD_Identifier></geographicIdentifier></EX_GeographicDescription></geographicElement></EX_Extent></extent><supplementalInformation><gco:CharacterString>Available on compact disc and on paper</gco:CharacterString></supplementalInformation></MD_DataIdentification></identificationInfo></MD_Metadata>
