The sediments of six cores and two dredge samples display varying incomplete sequences with normal faults, layers with sediment clasts and stratigraphic gaps. The data support the interpretation of the elongated VHS as a tectonic structure modelled by dominantly tensional faulting since at least early Pliocene time.
