Five marine oxygen isotope stages (MIS 1-5) were recognized by using the corresponding correlation between the CaCO (sub 3) record at this site and delta (super 18) O data from Core Z14-6 from the central Okinawa Trough. Quantitative study of Foraminifera showed that abundance of warm and shallow-dwelling species increased from MIS 5 to postglacial stage MIS 1, whereas cool and deep-dwelling species decreased correspondingly, reflecting an increase in the depth of the thermocline depth and surface sea temperature (SST) since stage MIS 5. The lower SST and shallower thermocline in MIS 5 was probably related to upwelling in the study area.
